Recent masterclasses and musical workshops

In recent weeks, the Music department have hosted a wealth of musical workshops and masterclasses to support and inspire our talented musicians.

Piano masterclass with Caroline Clipsham

The pianists of WBS had a masterclass with the award-winning concert pianist, Caroline Clipsham this week. Caroline, who is also one of our piano teachers and a WBS parent, worked with several of our pupils from the prep and senior school, with the other pianists observing. At the end, Caroline played to the pupils, demonstrating what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.

Choral masterclass with Exeter Cathedral's Tim Noon

The choirs of the Prep and Senior school sang in a series of masterclasses with the Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral, Tim Noon. His innate talent at extracting the very best from our singers was wonderful to observe and all singers came away enthused and encouraged. The choirs are about to embark on a very busy period of the school year, with numerous church services and concerts and Tim’s expert advice and attention to detail will make this next half term much easier for all.

Beatboxing with Danny Ladwa

In early October, West Buckland was visited by Danny Ladwa from School of Beatbox.  Danny is a UK Championship Beatboxer who leads workshops and teaches beatboxing across the UK.  Danny spent the day working with all students in Year 9, teaching them how to beatbox and build up a song just using beatboxing and singing.

The workshops were fantastic and Year 9 were blown away by Danny’s beatboxing skills and his encouragement and enthusiasm.  They created pieces that showed real creativity and excitement and each tutor group enjoyed an amazing hour exploring their own beatboxing skills.  Thank you very much to Danny for leading these workshops and well done to all the Year 9 students involved!

Putting the expertise into practice

The Chamber Choir had the opportunity to put some of their learning into practice on Friday, when they performed at the service to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Brereton.

The choir joined a distinguished list of dignitaries at the service to celebrate and commemorate the 200th anniversary.  They sang Save Us O Lord by Edward Bairstow and a recently arranged version of The Song of the Devon County School, for which Brereton wrote the text. This little-known gem was recently unearthed and modernised by our very own Dominic Carter.

Thank you to the Music Department for all their work in arranging masterclasses and workshops to inspire our students.
