Read on to discover how West Buckland helped prepare her for success both academically and beyond.

1. What have been your biggest challenges and greatest rewards in choosing to study at Cambridge?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced is balancing my time to pursue both my academic aspirations and my goals on the track. Additionally, it’s been difficult to maintain confidence in my abilities while being surrounded by high achievers who often display both ambitious and self-critical tendencies. On the flip side, being involved in athletics at Cambridge has opened amazing opportunities, such as traveling abroad to Japan and the East Coast of the USA. I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to be supervised by leading experts in their fields and to connect with an impressive alumnae network from my college.

2. What are some of the most notable differences between living in Cambridge and Devon?

Living in a city has its perks—everything from walking access to supermarkets to a greater variety of restaurants, more diversity, and open-minded individuals. Oh, and less rain! That said, I do miss Devon’s countryside, the fresh air, and the green landscapes that surround me when I’m at home.

3. What is the most important piece of advice you would give to West Buckland students considering an application to Cambridge?

First, choose A-Level subjects that you enjoy, excel at, and find manageable. Working hard in subjects you don’t enjoy is far more taxing, so make your hard work more bearable by focusing on subjects where you are more likely to succeed. This way, you’ll be able to find your niche and eventually select a degree that best suits your academic strengths. Then, dive into your chosen subject holistically—read articles, watch videos, even TikTok’s—and form your own opinions. Be your own person.

4. How well did West Buckland School prepare you for the step up into higher education?

West Buckland offered excellent support throughout my Cambridge application process, from mock interviews to one-on-one academic extension sessions with teachers in subjects related to my degree. At A-Level, my teachers didn’t just focus on the curriculum but encouraged broader discussions on related topics, often suggesting extra readings and podcasts to deepen my understanding. My only criticism is that I didn’t have access to a former West Buckland student (OWBA) who had completed the Oxbridge journey, but I now hope to fill that role for future applicants!

5. What opportunities do you hope your choice of subject and university will open for you after graduation?

My subject, Human, Social, and Political Sciences (HSPS), is unique to Cambridge and incredibly interdisciplinary, giving me the opportunity to explore a wide range of topics. This versatility keeps my options open as I look ahead to life after graduation. I’m currently considering postgraduate education, and I feel confident that the knowledgeable academic tutors at Cambridge will continue to guide me on the right path.
