Cricket is the winner

It’s fair to say that ‘cricket was the winner’ in the Graham Harris Cup this year, the annual competition for cricket clubs and schools in North Devon. West Buckland is proud to put forward a strong team of cricketers in each year group and our Under 12 team is no exception. The only problem (which is a nice problem to have) is that our A team are predominantly club players, which causes a challenge when it comes to selection.

In order to make a fairer competition, West Buckland released some of the players from school back to play for their clubs, which in turn allowed other players at school to be part of the team. West Buckland played some closely-fought and exciting cricket with classmates playing with and against each other.

In the final against North Devon Cricket Club,  Noah T and Eric L scored the maximum of 25 runs each and retired, as per the rules of the competition. This allowed players like Rupert F and Max W to take part and ultimately score the winning runs. West Buckland fought its way to victory to win the Graham Harris Cup and we are very proud of both the result and the sportsmanship.

This is the first year that all students in Year 7 have been able to select whether they play cricket, tennis or athletics in the Summer Term. This has meant that some girls are choosing cricket and some boys select tennis, so it’s been wonderful to have a mixed team to take out to matches. Well done to Iyla who played for West Buckland and to Rebecca S who played for North Devon during the cup matches.
