Meet Mike Reed

Parker's New Lead House Parent

My family and I moved from South Africa two years ago, seeking new adventures and opportunities. I have been in education for 23 years, during which I have held multiple roles as a teacher, sports coach, head of house, and houseparent. I have taught in both state and independent schools, in boys’ and co-educational settings, so pastoral care has always been a central part of my work. West Buckland feels familiar in its countryside location, with a sense of openness and space.

What struck me immediately was how well West Buckland balances the academic and pastoral aspects of school life. Finding a school that is similar to what I am used to—with sports on campus, excellent boarding facilities, a strong academic focus, and a holistic approach to education—was exciting. When we first arrived, we joked that we had stumbled upon Hogwarts! The way the new buildings are integrated with the old ones is impressive—it is compact yet spacious.

Unlike many traditional boarding schools, student at Parker’s have their own rooms and integrated common areas, which feels more like a university, offering independence but with the structure and support that is so important. It really creates a home environment while fostering independence.

The key to making boarding a positive experience is creating an environment where students can be themselves and become the best versions of who they are. As houseparents, we aim to offer as much support as possible within a structured, safe environment that encourages individuality. There are boundaries and guidance, but they should not hinder personal growth.

One of my goals is to further develop the community spirit in boarding by pairing older students in Parker’s with juniors in Boyer and Bamfylde for academic support and to bring the boarding houses together. Offering activities for everyone, not just specific houses, is crucial. Our job is to prepare students for the real world, and the more connections they make, the better off they will be. We do not just want to create successful students; we want to create successful adults. Having a variety of activities is vital so that everyone can find something they enjoy. It is also important to listen to the boarders and understand their interests, as they may have skills they want to develop.

We are just getting started, but I have a good feeling about the experience ahead. I am focused on maintaining what is working well while improving any areas that need attention. I am both nervous and excited, and my biggest challenge will be getting to know the students quickly in this new environment.

My advice to boarders is to get involved. The boarding community is the heart and soul of a school, as they have the most access to the school’s excellent facilities. I would love to see students outside in the afternoons rather than glued to their phones. In South Africa, we were outdoors all the time, with activities every day at school. I would encourage all students to do the same, and with so many ECAs on campus, I strongly encourage students to make the most of what West Buckland has to offer. It is important to focus on academics, but finding a balance is key.

My motto is, “Work hard, play hard, and fall asleep.”
