🎓 Finding a Passion for Theology - Isabella’s Route to Oxford
Taking Religion, Philosophy & Ethics A‑level at West Buckland School gave Isabella a completely new way of seeing the subject. Debating ethical issues and exploring the New Testament sparked a passion for theology that she wanted to pursue further.
With exceptional support from her teachers and the careers team, Isabella gained the confidence to apply to the University of Oxford. Weekly tutorial‑style discussions and guidance through the application process helped her develop her thinking and prepare for interviews - and ultimately secure her place.
She is now enjoying her first year studying Theology & Religion at Mansfield College, and the experience has been extraordinary - from matriculating at the Sheldonian to revising in the Radcliffe Camera, meeting inspiring speakers, learning Biblical Hebrew, and doing the subject she loves every day.
Well done, Isabella - we’re all incredibly proud of everything you’ve achieved!

💙 Incredible news from our partner school, Agoro Oyombe in Kenya!
Thanks to generosity of the West Buckland School community - from casuals‑day contributions to sponsoring Ben W’s squash marathon - we opened a girls’ boarding house at Agoro Oyombe in August 2024. The impact has been remarkable.
Recent exam results show a huge rise in the number of students achieving the grades needed to progress to university:
⭐ 21% of female boarders
⭐ 50% of the girls whose boarding places we fully funded
⭐ 18% of the entire year group
Boarding is giving the girls the space, stability and support they need to focus on their studies - and it’s transforming futures.
A heartfelt thank you to every family who contributed. Your support is changing lives, strengthening our partnership and and making an incredibly positive difference for the students at Agoro Oyombe!
And of course, huge congratulations to the students themselves - their hard work, resilience and determination are at the heart of this success.
🎓 A glimpse into Cambridge life with alumnus Zac!
We were delighted to welcome back former student Zac Johnson to speak with our Sixth Formers about life at the University of Cambridge. Zac shared valuable insights into the application process, interviews and what it’s really like studying Natural Sciences at St John’s College.
He encouraged students to be enthusiastic and authentic in their personal statements, to prepare thoughtfully for interviews, and not to be discouraged if the process feels challenging.
After achieving straight A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, Zac is now specialising in Earth Science with a focus on Geology - all while playing hockey and making the most of Cambridge life.
A huge thank you to Zac for returning to inspire the next wave of potential Cambridge applicants. Your advice and experience make a real difference!

🩺 Yesterday, we were thrilled to welcome former student Ella J back to West Buckland School!
Ella shared her journey studying Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham with our Medical Society. Students from Year 10 and above gained valuable insights into what the course involved, how to prepare for university interviews, and what life at university is really like!

After 10 incredible years as our Head of Outdoor Learning, Mr Hathway is now living his dream as an expedition leader in Antarctica aboard the SH Minerva.
We were thrilled to receive a letter and photos recently, giving students and staff a glimpse into his extraordinary adventures. From Macaroni and king penguins to humpback whales, 10‑metre swells, soaring seabirds, baby elephant seals, leopard seals, and vast rolling icebergs - he’s experiencing the wildest classroom imaginable.
We miss him here at West Buckland School, but we’re so glad he’s having such an epic adventure!

Last night our U15s took to the field in the North Devon final against Braunton and came away with the win following a composed, committed performance.
The boys worked hard defensively and supported each other well across the pitch, showing great teamwork and discipline in both attack and defence. Their focus and determination made for a strong, cohesive display.

What an incredible showcase of creativity and talent across all year groups:
✨ Year 7 wowed us with Prepared Sketches, each ensemble devising scenes around the theme “Message in a Bottle.”
🔥 Year 8 brought Spontaneous Improvisation Battles, featuring one-on-one house competitions.
🎬 Years 9 & 10 impressed with Prepared Scenes from Scripted Plays.
🎭 Years 11–13 rose to the challenge with Improvisation from a Shakespearean scene followed by Improvisation from a stimulus.
🎤 Finally, to top it all off, the day ended with an epic Lip Sync Battle, complete with backup dancers.

Following the success of last year, our Charities Committee is once again running a Christmas Gift Collection for those spending Christmas at North Devon Hospice.
🎄 Collect a tag from the school Christmas tree, each includes a suggested gift. Buy the gift, wrap it, attach the tag, and send it into school by Friday 12th December.

🧗 Bouldering Triumph – Arlo Secures Silver! 🥈
Last Wednesday, Arlo G proudly represented West Buckland School at the Schools Bouldering Competition held at The Pocket Climbing Gym.
After a five‑way tie for second place, Arlo battled through a tense climb‑off and a final hang‑off to secure the runner‑up spot. He flashed 9 climbs in total, showing incredible skill, determination, and composure under pressure.
Arlo finished an impressive 2nd place in the 11–14 age group individual category — the largest group, with over 30 students competing from their schools.

On Friday evening, our annual Sixth Form Winter Ball welcomed over 120 students for fantastic food, music and celebration.
The evening was student‑led, featuring a delicious two‑course meal and a fun quiz in the Karslake, before a fabulous performance from the Sixth Form band in the Memorial Hall with plenty of dancing.
A huge thank you to Mrs Hamilton, our caretakers and maintenance team, the catering staff, Mr Wilson on sound and lights - and of course all the students who helped make it such a memorable event!

This week, Grenville hosted a festive assembly exploring how Christmas is celebrated across the globe. The event was a big hit – and it all wrapped up (literally!) with a hilarious collaborative wrapping game as demonstrated by Mr Brown and Dr McKerrow!
