PADI Open Water Diving experience inspires students

Diving inspires a future in marine biology

Located near some of Britain’s finest coastline, it was a no-brainer for the extra-curricular department at West Buckland School to offer PADI Open Water diving as an extra-curricular activity. Scuba diving is not a mainstream offering for a school but at WBS it was felt that the opportunity to use the local natural environment while encouraging our students to step beyond their comfort zones was too good to miss.

Ten students from WBS took part in the course, which took place in Barnstaple Leisure Centre and Cromhall Quarry in Bristol. Now that the students have qualified as scuba divers they plan to make their first sea dive off the coast of Lundy Island, when they are hoping to have seals for company.

One of the many benefits of taking the course is the personal impression it has left on the new divers: one student wants to pursue a career in marine biology while another plans to take the next stage of the course in Hong Kong. All the students felt that their self-confidence and resilience had been strengthened by taking up scuba diving, and it has been a great bonding experience for the group.
