After reading German and French at New College Oxford and a PGCE at King’s College Cambridge, he taught in Salzburg, at Hitchin Boys’ School and Eton College, where he was also Master in College (Housemaster to the King’s Scholars). Subsequently, he was Warden of Forest School, London. Former chairman of HMC and Past Master of the Skinners’ Company.

Past and present governor of a number of state maintained and independent schools.
