Building Bridges to a Greener Future: Inform, Inspire, Achieve
Strip planted in front of 150 building by Y8 and Y12 WEBS group, creating a wildlife corridor.
Extended to whole wildflower meadow in front of 150 building, creating a rich, biodiverse meadow including Narcissus pseudonarcissus, Rhinanthus minor, Achillea millefolium, Leucanthemum vulgare, as well as plug plants.
The intention is to establish a flower rich habitat to mimic an old-fashioned Devon hay meadow, an important wildlife habitat that has seen declines of over 90% over the last 100 years.
The field adjacent to East Buckland Cross has been established as a hay meadow.
Queen Elizabeth Garden Project began. Yr 7 and 8 work towards their John Muir Award which involves some conservation tasks on the school grounds – this includes tree planting, tree care and wildlife habitat creation.
Hedge management – three-year rotation on some areas, reduced hedge trimming to every other year
A new drover lane is being created, with tree planting to connect the current Hatriss Lane (medieaval drover lane) to the wooded area that houses the observatory. 320 new trees planted.
Trees planted around the solar panel field with plans for 320 new trees each year for 2 years.

We have installed owl observatories, using movement activated cameras to record activity, identifying we have resident Barn Owls on site.
Bat surveys recorded the presence of many species of bat on the school grounds. The common pipistrelle was recorded most frequently and is one of the UK’s smallest, and most commonly sighted bats, and we also had visits from serotines, noctules, and many more.
The survey was conducted in 2018 as part of the Greater Horseshoe Bat Project, led by the Devon Wildlife Trust and with the support of many other local organisations.
There is so much more to our sustainability program within the school – too much to include on an introductory web-page. Below we list just a few of our future plans and initiatives and we look forward to updating you further on our progress.
In June 2025, West Buckland School partnered with Plan-It Eco and 361 Energy to host the South West’s first school sustainability festival to bring together local schools. Students took part in diverse and interactive workshops led by sustainability experts, sharing ideas and learning impactful ways to help our planet. The focus of the event was to inspire young minds to take small steps for a brighter, greener future and it was a great success.
Our thanks to our sponsors for making this event possible: West Buckland School Foundation, Easy Bathrooms, Streets Coachways, Withypool Tearooms, AMP Clean Energy, ORC Architecture, Yeotown and holidaycottages.co.uk
Further exciting plans being finalised – we look forward to sharing them with you soon
🎄✨🎄 We are at The South Molton Christmas Tree Festival!
We’re excited to be part of this year’s festival at St Mary Magdalene Church. Preparation has been a whole school community effort and we`ve loved every part!
🎄Our “Read & Reap” tree, created by Mrs Burge of Fuss Pots and trimmed with books from our library, features wooden decorations shaped and printed by our DT team and students using the school’s laser cutter, then hand‑finished by our Prep students.
🎄Our West Buckland Preparatory School tree was kindly donated by a parent and decorated with recycled and repurposed objects made by our Prep students - all in the school spirit of sustainability, which is at the heart of all we do!
This year’s festival features 108 enchanting trees, live music and more, and runs from Thursday 4 – Monday 8 of December (10am–4pm daily, Sunday 12–4pm).
Come along and be inspired by creativity, community, and festive cheer!

🍏🍏 Double Silver at the Green Apple Awards!
We are proud to share that West Buckland School has won two International Green Apple Environment Awards for our environmental achievements - one recognising our energy reduction programme and the other celebrating our whole-school approach to sustainability.
From over 1,600 global applications, there were just 200 recipients and we were the only school in attendance at the prestigious ceremony held yesterday at the House of Lords. We are the first UK boarding school to receive a Green Apple Award since its inception more than 30 years ago - a truly historic achievement for our community.
From biomass boilers and solar energy to planting 4,000+ trees and cultivating wildflower meadows, our commitment to sustainability is stronger than ever. Initiatives like Green Futures Day, food waste reduction, and our first Sustainability Festival highlight how eco-conscious education is at the heart of our community.
For our students, this recognition reinforces the importance of living and learning sustainably, inspiring them to carry forward eco-conscious values into their future studies and lives. 🌱

🌿 Exploring Natural Selection with Snails! 🐌
Our A-level Biology and Environmental Systems and Societies students have been diving into the fascinating world of natural selection by studying the white-lipped and brown-lipped banded snails. These tiny creatures are perfect models for understanding how nature selects for certain traits over time.
Through hands-on research and observation, our students are uncovering the secrets of evolution and gaining valuable insights into the natural world. It`s science in action!
