Teacher Blog: Focus on Applied Science

Discover the Magic of Applied Science at WBS!

If you love science but don’t fancy diving head‑first into the traditional A Level route, the AAQ Applied Science course might just be your perfect match. Think of it as science with a twist, hands‑on, practical, varied, and brilliantly flexible.

What Makes Applied Science So Exciting?

This course is ideal for those who want to keep science in their lives while also exploring a broader mix of A Level subjects. It’s equivalent to a full A Level, but with a fresh approach.

Year 1: Explore the Big Three

The first year is all about exploring Science across three key areas: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, building a super‑strong foundation across all three sciences. This year is all about discovering how the world works, from cells to circuits to chemical reactions.

Year 2: Science Comes to Life

The second year is where it gets seriously hands‑on. You’ll complete internally assessed coursework packed with real‑world experiments, practical investigations and deep dives into contemporary scientific issues. If you love learning by *doing*, you’ll thrive here!

Where Can Applied Science Take You?

Students who complete the course go on to study all sorts of amazing degrees:

  • Paramedicine
  • Food Science
  • Physiotherapy
  • And other science‑based subjects

Many achieve fantastic grades thanks to the coursework‑led structure, personalised feedback and the chance to shine outside of traditional exams. It is also a brilliant route for anyone who studied Combined Science at GCSE and wants to keep the journey going!

Meet the Team

The course is delivered by two outstanding educators:

Mr Brown

A highly experienced A Level Biology and Chemistry teacher. He is passionate about widening access to science and loves seeing students succeed outside the conventional A Level pathway.

“If delivering this course enables students to achieve a high‑grade science qualification and pursue science at university, when they might not have otherwise had the opportunity, then that is a fantastic outcome.”

Mrs Hughes

An exceptional A Level Biology teacher with deep practical expertise. Mrs Hughes has taught all three sciences at GCSE and brings real‑world lab know‑how that helps students grow in confidence and skill.
