Ten Tors Challenge 2025
An unforgettable weekend of adventure!
This year, 26 WBS students took on the Ten Tors Challenge, continuing a proud tradition of entering teams into the event that dates back to the early 1970s.
They joined thousands of teenagers from across the South West of England and beyond to embark on a journey of either 35, 45, or 55 miles across Dartmoor. Under Gen Sir Roland Walker’s starting orders, they set off at 7 am on Saturday morning and had until 5 pm on Sunday to cross the finish line. The annual challenge is organized by the British Army’s Headquarters South West and supported by the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, civilian emergency services, and volunteers.
In 2025, we’re proud to have 26 students participating in the challenge – two teams on the 35-mile route, two teams on the 45-mile route, and two students representing West Buckland School with Sea Moor Explore, a local outdoor youth group.
Our students demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience, with all of them crossing the finish line on Sunday. Special congratulations to Felix W for completing the 55-mile route and successfully achieving all three levels of the challenge – an outstanding accomplishment.
Throughout the year, our pupils have undertaken Silver and Gold DofE expeditions on Exmoor and the Brecon Beacons, engaged in wild camping on Dartmoor, earned first aid qualifications, and completed the Mountain Training Hill Skills course. This structured training program has been instrumental in preparing them for the Ten Tors Challenge.
As one team member, Aidan L, summed up the experience: ‘Despite the harsh conditions and weather at times, Ten Tors was a brilliant experience. It built and developed the bond between my team/friends, connecting us further not only in a sense of comradeship, but also with nature. Ten Tors has pushed us to become more resilient humans and leave our comfort zone to endure challenges which will test your mental and physical strength. The Ten Tors staff were amazing and were always so welcoming when we arrived at a tor.
