A Remarkable Achievement on Dartmoor
A huge congratulations to our three West Buckland School teams who took part in this year’s Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor.
In total, twelve students took part in the 35-mile challenge and six Year 12 students in the 45-mile challenge, representing the school at what is widely regarded as the toughest youth challenge in the country, bringing together schools and groups from across the South West for a demanding and unforgettable weekend.
Ten Tors is as much a test of teamwork, resilience and determination as it is of physical endurance. Over the course of the weekend, our students pushed themselves further than many ever have before, successfully completing routes of 35 miles and 45 miles across challenging moorland terrain. Impressively, all three teams finished as complete teams, an achievement that reflects both their preparation and their commitment to supporting one another throughout the challenge.
The weekend began early on Saturday morning, with staff providing a well-earned bacon sandwich before the teams walked up to the start point. After a memorable start featuring a parachute display and the firing of the cannons, the Ten Tors Challenge was officially underway.
Conditions on Dartmoor were bright and sunny, though accompanied by a cold wind that added to the challenge. On Sunday, parents gathered at the finish to welcome the teams home, watching both 35-mile teams cross the line at 11:56 and 12:30, followed by the 45-mile team finishing strongly at 14:55 – sore legs and feet testament to the scale of what they had achieved.
Every student involved showed outstanding determination, teamwork and commitment, giving their absolute best throughout the weekend. Alongside the support of dedicated staff, this was a truly collective effort and one that deserves enormous recognition.
