Schools’ Aerospace Careers Programme

Friday 6 October

The Schools’ Aerospace Careers Event at West Buckland School will take place on Friday 6th October with a start time of 10.30am (staff and students should arrive by 10.15am). The likely finish time will be around 1pm. The event is open to students who will be in Years 10-13 and they will be following level 2 or 3 courses which are likely to enable progression into courses and careers in engineering. Clearly it will particularly interest those students with an interest in aerospace. Events such as this will take place all over the UK in 2023-24 and ours looks like it will be the only one taking place in the southwest in the academic year – more are planned in the region for 2024-25. In addition, there is digital Support via a new website at Home Page – Schools’ Aerospace Careers Programme and social media; work experience industry placements; and an ACP Network which will bring young people and companies face-to-face. We are currently in what might be termed the Fourth Industrial Revolution this is an exciting programme through which to attract young talent into many developing technologies in areas such as commercial aerospace, defence and military, space and advanced air mobility. Several aerospace companies will be involved in the event which will include practical activities and talks as well an increasing range of supporting equipment. For example, on the left, Boston Dynamic’s robot, ‘Spot’; and on the right, a museum quality replica of a NASA Space Suttle EMU space suit. Both of these items will feature in the event, among other exhibits, possibly including virtual reality aids, portable 3D printers and drones. Sixth Form open evening

Thursday 12 October

Our Sixth Form Open Evening takes place on Thursday 12th October, starting at 5.45pm in the Memorial Hall. On arrival, there will be signs to get you to where you need to be. The purpose of the evening is to provide sufficient information and guidance about future options and Sixth Form life at West Buckland School so that informed decisions can be made. This includes two distinct curriculum pathways: our well-established A-level/BTEC programme and the innovative IB Career-related Programme: Why Choose WBS Sixth Form? | North Devon, Independent College (westbuckland.com) and Career-related Programme (CP) – International Baccalaureate® (ibo.org). Over the last few years, our students have gained excellent results and the school has an enviable record of meeting the needs of the members of the Sixth Form. This, together with structured and clear guidance, enables nearly every student to win a place at their chosen university or alternative pathway. We will provide guidance on the important choices of post-16 studies and how this will impact university and employment options. There will be a tour with current Sixth Form students and informative presentations given by the Head looking at subject choices, future pathways, life in the Sixth Form and boarding. This will be followed by an opportunity to meet with Heads of Departments to find out more about the range of subjects on offer in the Sixth Form. There will also be a chance to explore opportunities beyond the classroom, including our academic activities, performing arts, sport and outdoor learning.
