Pastoral Care and Safeguarding

At West Buckland School, students thrive in an environment where they are well-known and cared for by staff, fostering a sense of happiness and confidence. Our school boasts a dedicated safeguarding team that supports all staff, ensuring that pupil wellbeing and safety are always at the forefront of our priorities.

Our Supportive Community

The welfare and well-being of all students at West Buckland underpins all aspects of school life as we guide pupils through the challenges of adolescence and help them to make sensible and informed choices.

The Good Schools Guide praised the school’s house system and the strong sense of community evident within it.

A strong community

This is created through:

Our PSHE, enrichment and tutor programmes – covering a wide range of personal, social and health, and safeguarding issues.

Our peer mentoring programme – aiming to support pupils in key transition years.

Our broad extra curricular programme – promoting personal and character development through a multitude of activities

Pupil Voice – feeling heard is vital for young peoples’ wellbeing. Pupils can express their views through numerous peer group channels as well as an anonymous reporting system.

Our Support System

Our House system fosters a strong sense of belonging and spirit. Within our four houses (Brereton, Fortescue, Grenville and Courtenay), pupils are supported by a House Tutor whom they see each day, and a Housemaster/mistress who oversees their academic progress and wellbeing throughout their time in the school.

Our boarders, of all ages, are looked after by caring houseparents, who live on-site, creating a home away from home experience in the evenings and at weekends.

In the Sixth Form, pupils are supported by the Head of Sixth Form as well as a Day Matron, who oversee all pastoral care, especially during stressful exam periods when emphasis is put on managing a busy work load with meaningful ‘down time’ and extra-curricular activities.

Our School Counsellor and School Nurses are available to all students who feel they need to speak in confidence to someone independent of the school.

Our Chaplain is also available to support pupils of any faith and none.

Safeguarding

Our well trained safeguarding team support the community to be vigilant and responsive to pupil needs.
