A Teacher's Reflection

Interview by Dasha, Year 13.

In September 2000, my journey at West Buckland School began as a geography teacher, marking the start of a 23-year tenure. Three years into my role, I became Head of Geography. This role, spanning 15 years, paved the way for further opportunities as I later assumed the responsibilities of Head of Careers and subsequently Head of Sixth Form.

Reflecting on the alumni network, which boasts over 600 Year 13 and former students on the OWBA (Old West Buckland Association) career support page on LinkedIn, I am inspired by the success stories. From a recent appointment as CEO of a prominent company, to pursuing a career in artwork, and as a pilot with Cathay Pacific, the accomplishments of our alumni are truly remarkable. Notably, a former geography student taught by myself and Mr Hymer two decades ago, now holds the esteemed position of BA First Captain.

For the majority of my time here, my focus has been primarily academic although the role of Head of Sixth Form introduced a pastoral element. However, a recent shift in my position saw me assuming the role of Deputy Head Academic while retaining my duties as Head of Sixth Form. This has redirected my focus towards supporting our academic staff and leading Heads of Departments, presenting new challenges and opportunities for growth.

As my responsibilities evolve, I regret the reduction in my interactions with Sixth Form students. Nonetheless, I now engage more closely with lower years and the Prep school community, fostering a sense of continuity and connection.

Among the highlights of my time at West Buckland are the educational visits across the globe with the students. From trips to Barcelona, Morocco, India, and Sri Lanka to domestic excursions within the UK, each journey has offered unique insights and with great experiences. Most satisfying are my visits to Kenya, where I have been three times with students to our partner school, Agoro Oyombe, and four in teacher visits, with plans to return with our students this July. Witnessing students flourish outside the confines of the classroom during these trips has been immensely rewarding.

In navigating the pivotal years of Sixth Form, I advocate for thorough research into university options, embracing individuality, and fostering a culture of academic integrity. While the majority of our students pursue higher education within the UK, I encourage exploration of alternative pathways such as apprenticeships or international universities.

Regarding the integration of technology, while AI serves as a valuable tool in education, it should complement rather than replace traditional learning methods. Embracing a mixed economy of paper-based and digital learning, we strive to empower students with diverse learning preferences.

As I reflect on my journey spanning over two decades at West Buckland School, I am grateful for the opportunities to inspire and empower generations of students, guiding them towards academic excellence and personal growth. Looking ahead, I am committed to nurturing an environment where every student can thrive and succeed, embodying the ethos of West Buckland School.
