At West Buckland School, our Drama programme cultivates creative, analytical and expressive performances through interactive sessions underpinned by established techniques. We prioritise self-expression, individuality and creative exploration within a positive, challenging, and supportive environment, which, in turn, fosters self-confidence
We have a strong proficiency in Drama, and since the establishment of the 150 Theatre in 2015, we have had access to excellent facilities for rehearsals and performances. Moreover, the theatre provides a platform for students interested in production to enhance their skills.
Our established annual pattern of productions offers a smorgasbord of opportunities for students of all ages to perform in front of an audience. Creative Zone, involving pupils throughout the school, culminates in a show in the Summer Term. Junior pupils will be involved in performing musicals and plays, whilst each year there is a senior school production for performers in Years 10-13.
House Drama is a highlight every year – students pit their theatrical talents against rival houses in a variety of different disciplines – often with surprisingly talented results!
Our biennial musical productions in the Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple and the Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe, have drawn critical acclaim and have drawn on astounding strengths of our talented actors, singers and musicians.
These productions offer the students the opportunity to work in a professional theatre both on stage and back stage.
Curriculum Drama
All pupils have drama lessons in Years 7 and 8; drama then becomes an option for pupils in Y9-11. Drama is a thriving subject at GCSE; for more information on curriculum drama please visit the academic page:
Speech and Drama
A large number of pupils also have individual and small group speech and drama lessons which prepare them for LAMDA and Vanguard examinations, and participation in the North Devon Festival.
