Strength Across the Age Groups in all Sports in First Half of Easter Term

Large Block Fixtures Show Depth of Sport at West Buckland

This is a busy term of fixtures for both boys hockey and girls netball. With county and regional tournaments, as well as weekly inter-school fixtures, our teams have been on the go.  The fact that, as a school, we are able to field multiple teams at each group is a testament to the depth of the school’s sporting capability.

At every age group, we are able to field A and B teams, with netball going on to C and D teams as well, giving the vast majority of students the opportunity to represent their school in some form.  It’s not just the fact that we are able to field these teams, but that they are successful as well.  Through the excellent training they receive from our specialist team of sports staff, skills are honed and drills practiced, so that we can take on the might of larger schools such as Millfield with confidence.

It's not just about the major sports

Basketball continues to thrive at West Buckland and our reputation for producing a strong squad that continues to fight for top spot in the the South West league, is a testament to the excellent coaching and dedication of those involved.

This season alone, the squad has played eight matches and only lost one, a close fought contest against Millfield.

Squash continues to develop, with the refurbished courts being used more and more, with students gaining from the experience of our tennis coach, Chris Gill. The North Devon Squash club has also been established for those in our community who want to play.

Great success in cross-country

Learning to cross-country run in North Devon must be the equivalent of learning to swim in an off-shore current!  With the experience of the Exmoor thrown in, it’s no great surprise that our cross-country team have really shone this season. After competing as part of the North Devon team, in Exeter, five runners were chosen to represent Devon at the SW XC Championships last week.

George T, Zac A, Nyla R, Charlotte C and Henry G all performed really well at the SW championships and did the school proud.  George and Nyla also received automatic qualification for the Cross Country National Championships at Nottingham on the 18th March.  We wish them the best of luck!
