Alasdair McCombe

Head of English

I graduated with a combined honours degree in English and Media from The University of Plymouth in 1994. My degree allowed me to follow my interests of non fiction writing and photography and when I left uni I entertained grand ambitions to travel the world and work as a journalist. However, it didn’t quite work out like that. Instead, I applied for a job working for the sports photographic agency Allsport/Getty and moved from Devon to London. The agency was founded by Tony Duffy who took the iconic picture of Bob Beamon’s gravity defying long jump leap at the Mexico Olympics. I lived and worked in London for 6 years but the lure of travelling was always in the back of mind and as the Millennium approached I flew to South America and travelled for 6 months. On returning I wanted to try my hand at teaching so I applied to the University of Exeter. In 2000 I embarked on my new career as an English teacher and settled and worked at Exmouth Community College for the next 23 years. At one point the college had almost 2500 students so working at West Buckland will offer a completely different experience and one I’m really looking forward to.
